Scripture:
Luke 3:21, 22

Starting Question:
When was the last time you started a really big project? How did you start?

Opening Heaven

When Jesus was baptised, a couple of amazing things happened.

First, the Holy Spirit changed into a dove and landed on Jesus. We don't know if the Dove landed on His head or His shoulder. The Bible just says, "the Holy Spirit, in bodily form, descended on Him like a dove." What we do know is, the Holy Spirit showed up.

Second, God's voice boomed from the sky. He didn't say anything scary. He didn't shout his commandments like in Deuteronomy 5. He just wanted to say how proud He was of His boy, “This is my dearly loved Son, who brings me great joy.”

But, do you know why these things happened? The answer seems obvious. Jesus just got baptised! He was about to go into the wilderness and be tempted. Then His ministry of healing, compassion and salvation would begin. So, God was encouraging Jesus by showing up in a big way.

But that's not the reason given in the scripture reading. Read it again, aloud. Did you hear it? "As He was praying, the Heavens opened!" Have you ever wondered what happens when you pray?

The Trinity - Father, Son and Holy Spirit - gathered in the waters of the Jordan that day because of prayer. The Son was beginning a good work. The Father was overjoyed to see their plan coming to life. And the Holy Spirit was present embracing and empowering the moment with Divine blessing and potential.

The Godhead is waiting to tear apart the Heavens and rush to your aid, too. The Father wants to encourage you. The Holy Spirit wants to empower you. And the Son wants to join you. All you need to do is pray. That's what prayer does in the Kingdom of God. It gets things started.

Let us pray!
