The Gift of Teaching - Biblical Foundation

Notes from Bill Hybels Video "The Importance of Teaching in the Local Church"

2 Pillars of strength in a successful church – Leadership & Teaching

1 Timothy 4:12-15 – Don’t let your youthfulness hold you back
“Don't let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in life, in love, in faith and in purity. Until I come, devote yourself to the public reading of Scripture, to preaching and to teaching. Do not neglect your gift, which was given you through a prophetic message when the body of elders laid their hands on you. Be diligent in these matters; give yourself wholly to them, so that everyone may see your progress. Watch your life and doctrine closely. Persevere in them, because if you do, you will save both yourself and your hearers.”

Give special attention to scripture study and teaching
Take Pains with these things, be absorbed in the development of your teaching
Yo
u should be getting visibly better at your teaching.
Don’t quit. Don’t get discouraged. Persevere!

Acts 2:42 – The church distinguished itself by devoting itself to the apostles teaching
"
They devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer."

Everything we do in church is in preparation for the teaching of the Word
Nothing takes the place of the teaching. Nothing should. Nothing can.
Teaching catalyses spiritual growth.

Teaching leads to change. In any area – teaching is required for growth & maturity.

Q. How do you ensure that great teaching is happening at your church?
A. Make sure that those teaching have the spiritual gift of teaching.
